Should we deport criminal dual citizens? Dutton wants Aussies to vote

There’s a reason politicians don’t like direct democracy and why there will never be a referendum on big national debates. Politicians are frightened voters will give the wrong answer.

Peter Dutton’s suggestion of a referendum to give the federal government the power to deport dual citizens convicted of serious crimes is a proposal worthy of debate.

It’s not “insane”, as one unnamed “Liberal figure” told the ABC, nor is it “mad”, as former Coalition attorney-general George Brandis claimed. Dutton raises a serious issue and many Australians would agree with him. “My argument is if you betray your allegiance to our country in that way (i.e. commit a serious crime), you should expect to lose your citizenship.”
