The voting public rates Scott Morrison above Bill Shorten in almost all key personal attributes, including competency, trust and grasp of economic policy, while Mr Shorten wins hands down on party unity.
And while Mr Morrison continues to lead Mr Shorten as preferred prime minister, the gap is the closest it has been since Mr Morrison became leader in August last year.
