Private hospitals demand funding certainty as surgery ban hits

Private hospitals, some of which face collapse due to the ban on elective surgery, are lining up to become part of the public health system in return for the state and federal governments covering their costs.

However, the federal government, which deems the private hospitals vital in the fight against coronavirus, has devolved the negotiation of funding agreements to the states, causing frustrations among private operators who want the same nationally consistent arrangement as public hospitals.
