The release of a long-awaited privacy review and its landmark proposal for a personal right of privacy is expected to unleash a wave of lobbying ahead of final consideration by cabinet and the rollout of legislation later this year.

The review proposes an historic shift in privacy rules in favour of citizens, creating a personal right of privacy and a statutory tort for serious breaches, supported by a raft of new protections to give citizens better control over their data.
