Australia has adopted strict measures minimising social contact to reduce the spread of coronavirus but avoided some of the more draconian steps overseas that have put cities into lockdown.

Scott Morrison and Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy stressed that protective measures had to be "sustainable" because they could be in place for at least six months but the country needed to still be able to function.
