Scott Morrison has promised ongoing Australian assistance to help Afghanistan retain the hard-won gains and freedoms of the past two decades after confirming the final troops will come home by September.

The Prime Minister said the last 80 Australian personnel in Afghanistan would be withdrawn in concert with the US withdrawal after President Joe Biden confirmed American troops would leave before the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks that sparked the war on terror.
