Byelections require a government to salvage any positive news and an Opposition to claim voters have sent the government a damning message.

The “Super Saturday” byelections in four NSW state seats followed the standard formula. But the combustible combination of an imminent federal election, a Coalition government in trouble, a new Premier and a country with a severe COVID-19 hangover means interpretation of the results is particularly sensitive.
