The Albanese government is moving quickly to end the damaging row over the indefinite detention of non-citizens, after the High Court gave it the green light to put the worst offenders back behind bars.

Following Tuesday’s release by the High Court of the reasons for its November 8 decision that resulted in the release of 138 criminals or people of dubious character, the government was busily preparing what it said should be the final legislative response to the drama, which has contributed to its plunge in the polls.
