For the first time in more than 40 years, Labor’s Left faction finally had the numbers to control the national conference, the party’s triennial and paramount policymaking forum.

Yet, in the weeks and months leading up to this week’s event, the Left had to work up ways to defeat itself so as not to embarrass the government, especially Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, himself a creature of the faction.
