Labor moves to lift assisted dying ban in territories

Labor backbenchers Luke Gosling and Alicia Payne will introduce private member’s legislation to permit assisted dying laws in the ACT and Northern Territory, as the Albanese government moves to outpace teal independents on ending the Howard-era ban.

Government MPs are expected to be granted a conscience vote on ending the Andrews bill, the 1997 legislation that barred the territories from legalising euthanasia, originally championed by former minister Liberal MP Kevin Andrews.
