Labor MP Tania Lawrence has departed from the script being used by the major parties by likening Barnaby Joyce to Sir Les Patterson and suggesting he reconsider his position as an MP.

After Mr Joyce, a member of the shadow cabinet, was filmed last week lying on his back in a Canberra street while affected by prescription drugs and alcohol, talking on his phone, Ms Lawrence said the former deputy prime minister was an embarrassment to the entire parliament.
