The furore over the appointment of former NSW National Party leader John Barilaro to a plum New York-based $500,000 trade commissioner job is another reminder how the bar has been lifted on integrity and governance in government.

Along with pork-barrelling, “jobs for the boys” has been one of the ugly stalwarts of modern public-sector life.
