Inside the WA premier’s plan to wean his state off China

Rather than be a quarry for Beijing or the source of a never-ending supply of FIFO holidaymakers in Bali, Roger Cook wants to reinvent the state’s image in Asia.

West Australian Premier Roger Cook describes his state’s economy as “China heavy”.

He readily concedes that WA is uniquely dependent on China, and will continue to be until it develops new markets and industries of scale that are not iron ore, which delivered more than $9 billion in royalties to the state last year.
