Immigration target on track without foreign student caps: Treasury

The Albanese government is pressing ahead with foreign student caps the industry warns will hurt universities and the economy, despite Treasury data showing that even without the crackdown migration numbers are tapering off as expected.

International students make up about half of the net flow of migrants each year. They surged back into the country after the end of pandemic border closures, sending net overseas migration to a record 548,000 for the year ended September 2023.
