The federal cabinet decision to move forward with an economy-wide digital identity system marks a historic moment for the future of the digital economy, with an ambitious ministerial timetable to have new rules enabling industrial level integration of public and private services in place by the middle of next year.

For more than a decade numerous reports have been increasingly calling for the urgent deployment of a national regulatory regime for the verification of identity and the linking of public and private services.
