Donald Trump hasn’t had anything like the impact on the Australian election campaign as he managed in Canada. There have been no insulting tweets about Australia becoming the “cherished” 51st state or the imposition of economy-destroying tariffs on a close ally or Trump’s fake claims of the country unfairly getting hundreds of billions of dollars of US subsidies a year.

But Trump’s 100 days in office have certainly done Peter Dutton no favours. The Coalition is desperately reminding Australians this election is about whether Anthony Albanese deserves another term in office and has nothing to do with the politics of the US.
