The High Court had its most divided year under Chief Justice Susan Kiefel in 2019, as dissents doubled and the number of unanimous judgments slipped to their lowest level in seven years.

The annual study of voting patterns by Professor Andrew Lynch of UNSW also shows the court's youngest judge, James Edelman, is carving out a reputation as its leading contrarian.
