Depending on whom you ask, Simon Holmes à Court is either one of the most powerful and significant people in Australian politics or he is a non-entity with no influence over anything. By his own account, he might even be both.

Since founding the crowdfunding outfit Climate 200 in 2019, the self-described “energy geek” has helped an expanding group of progressive-minded independent MPs take a knife to the Liberal Party’s moderate wing, cutting a swathe through a series of formerly blue ribbon seats and turbocharging one of the most serious challenges to Australia’s two-party system since Federation.
