Greens’ social housing veto raises spectre of double dissolution

A decision by the Greens to defer debate on the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund for another four months has granted the Albanese government the first half of a trigger for an early, double dissolution election.

After the Greens sided with the Coalition to thumb their nose at Labor and social housing groups, and defer any further debate on the legislation until October 16, the government said this qualified under the Constitution as the first of two steps towards establishing a trigger.
