In putting principles over political loyalty, Fatima Payman has abandoned a promising parliamentary career with the Labor Party.

Although there has been commentary that Payman – with 1681 primary votes – was an accidental senator who won her seat thanks only to the popularity of then premier Mark McGowan, within party circles she was seen as a rising star.
