Free market or not, they’re all interventionists now

The Coalition has taken a risk by defending free-market principles, even if it has a long history of energy market intervention.

Apropos of nothing in particular, the Australia Institute ran full-page newspaper ads this week in which 100 economists jointly urged the Albanese government to can the stage three income tax cuts.

Already this year, after flirting with the idea of paring back the tax cuts at the expense of higher-income earners, the government backed off with a view to revisiting the policy closer to its legislated implementation date of July 1, 2024.
