Fix planning laws to improve supermarket competition, says Aldi boss
Planning laws and supply chain capacity constraints are holding back German discount supermarket chain Aldi from further expanding in Australia, prompting calls for state and local regulations to be considered as part of competition reform.
Aldi chief executive Anna McGrath told a Senate inquiry into supermarket pricing that the company wants to grow its network of 600 stores – into areas including Far North Queensland and Tasmania – but a lack of development sites in catchment areas is holding back progress.
