2 out of 3 Australians would like all borders open by Christmas

New research from Newgate, a PR firm and political lobbyist, has found that 63 per cent of Australians would like to see all borders completely open by Christmas – up from 58 per cent on the previous week.

Victorian and New South Wales respondents were the most supportive of re-opening state borders, while the majority of respondents from Western Australia were happy for their borders to remain shut.

A majority of the 1700 survey respondents supported opening domestic borders immediately for medical (87 per cent), compassionate (82 per cent) and work (67 per cent) reasons.

Taken from Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 September, the COVID-19 tracker survey also explored Victorians' attitudes to the lockdowns and sentiment about the pace of easing restrictions.

The hard shutdown in Melbourne continues, and there has been an increase in those saying the roadmap is 'too slow and cautious', rising to 38 per cent from 33 per cent on the previous week.

Around half (48 per cent) say that the pace is appropriate, down from 53 per cent on the previous week, while 11 per cent continue to think it is 'too fast and risky'.

More broadly, concern about coronavirus is easing bit by bit, and for the first time since early July, the level of unprompted concern among survey respondents dropped below the 50 per mark to 48 per cent.
