Election date is now caught in the eye of the storm

Cyclone Alfred threatens to inject more uncertainty into a contest, the outcome of which is already impossible to predict.

Ever since Scott Morrison made his ill-fated trip to Hawaii in 2019, just as the summer bushfire crisis began to intensify, political leaders, state and federal, have adopted a belt-and-braces approach to natural disasters.

No one since Morrison has wanted to be accused of having underestimated the extent of a disaster, let alone be seen to be inadequately prepared in terms of the relief efforts required.
