The Opposition has warned it will not support two of the favourites to replace Philip Lowe as governor of the Reserve Bank, arguing their independence has been compromised by working closely with Liberal and Labor finance ministers.

With Treasurer Jim Chalmers about to end months of speculation and announce the next RBA governor, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton effectively drew a line through lead candidates Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy and finance department boss Jenny Wilkinson.
