A lot will be read into the result of Saturday’s Dunkley byelection triggered by the tragic death from cancer in December of popular Labor MP Peta Murphy. But that will be because this is a by-election about nothing other than a political horse race.
Located around the bayside city of Frankston in outer south-eastern Melbourne, Dunkley was a Liberal seat for 20 years before its boundaries were redrawn to take in some lower socioeconomic areas making it fairly safe for Labor with a 6.3 per cent margin at the 2022 election.
