Simon Holmes à Court was speechless. Standing on the footpath next to Auburn Road, Hawthorn, in Melbourne’s leafy inner-east, he had just been kicked out of a campaign event for treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

It was the lead-up to the 2019 poll and the businessman and benefactor was left holding a glass of wine outside a local pub, traffic buzzing past.
