Deeming rate freeze costing up to $1.8 billion a year

Labor’s surprise decision to extend a two-year freeze on deeming rates for 870,000 welfare recipients will hit the budget up to $1.8 billion a year and keep more money in the economy amid stubbornly high inflation.

If the freeze was maintained over the four-year forward estimates, the overall unrealised savings could be multiples of that figure, according to government documents, though this is not reflected in the budget papers.
