Mathias Cormann has confirmed he will step down as Finance Minister and leave politics at the end of the year, sparking speculation over who will replace him in the pre-Christmas reshuffle.

Although Trade Minister Simon Birmingham is the frontrunner, others, including Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, are believed to be interested.
