Climate action is a productivity challenge for Chalmers’ roundtable

An economy-wide carbon tax, which would encourage the private sector to invest in the cheapest ways to reach our climate targets, should be on the agenda at the summit.

Anthony Albanese’s thumping May 3 federal election victory has virtually guaranteed Labor at least a further two terms in office. With Peter Dutton’s nationalised nuclear policy consigned to the waste bin of history, the prospect of six years of climate and energy policy continuity under Labor means it should be full (wind and solar-powered) steam ahead on Australia’s net-zero transition.

Post-election policy recalibrations, reassessments and repositionings are under way in business, industry, and environmental organisations about how best to progress Australia’s challenging decarbonisation goal. This comes as debate ramps up about what 2035 emissions reduction target the nation should set to meet its international commitment to help combat climate change under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
