Beijing is seizing on public comments about China to paint Australia as intolerant and discriminatory, Australia's top diplomat warns, suggesting political and business figures may need to consider tempering their remarks.

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade secretary Frances Adamson told a Senate estimates hearing China's Communist rulers were keen to highlight division in Australia for propaganda purposes, not just to an internal Chinese audience but in other countries as well.
