Chinese coercion, Trump tariffs put heat on economic security

A review of intelligence agencies has urged beefing up the bureaucracy, led by Treasury, with a new focus on protecting Australia’s economic security at a time when Chinese and Western economies are diverging, protectionism and coercion are on the rise and supply chains vulnerable.

The declassified version of the review, released on Friday by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will help bolster the government’s case for its Future Made in Australia agenda, which is seeking to establish greater self-sufficiency in key industrial sectors such as critical minerals, green energy, manufacturing and technology.
