Albanese backs Philippines in South China Sea dispute: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed Australia will sign a strategic partnership with the Philippines on Friday. In doing so, he made a point of saying Australia supported the 2016 arbitration ruling that found the Philippines had territorial rights over large swathes of the South China Sea which are effectively controlled by China.

Marise Payne to retire: Senator and former foreign minister Marise Payne has announced her retirement from politics, effective from this month. Payne released a statement this morning, confirming she will leave her role as senator. “It is an extraordinary honour to be elected to represent one’s community in the Federal parliament,” she wrote.

Dozens of flights canned from wild weather: Dozens of flights across the east coast have been cancelled as a result of a wild weather system. Among those cancellations include 38 Virgin flights. Melbourne and Sydney airports also had their operations restricted to a single runway on Friday morning due to high winds.

ASIC sues for members’ lost $69m in warning to super industry: The corporate watchdog is taking AustralianSuper to the Federal Court for failing to consolidate the accounts of 90,000 members, which cost those individuals a total of $69 million.
