The rollout of major public transport projects offering commuters a genuine alternative to driving should spur efforts to introduce congestion charging in the major capital cities, an economic think tank says.
In a report released overnight, the Grattan Institute argues the time is ripe to slug motorists a "modest fee" to drive on freeways and major arterial roads to boost productivity.
