BAE pivots to missiles in effort to salvage troubled frigate program

British shipbuilder BAE Systems is trying to salvage troubled plans to build nine major warships in Adelaide, unveiling a design to build frigates packed with missiles instead of vessels optimised for hunting submarines.

BAE’s proposal was released at a major naval expo in Sydney on Tuesday, where the chief of navy urged Australians to show “strategic patience” over the ambitious AUKUS proposal to build nuclear-powered submarines in Australia.
