Australia’s Constitution isn’t that hard to change

The majority of the 44 attempts to change Australia’s Constitution involved taking power from the states and giving it to the Commonwealth. Virtually every time, the voters said “no”.

David Hume and George Williams wrote a column last Friday that pointed to the Voice referendum and then argued that it is too hard and too politically risky to change Australia’s Constitution.

The gist of their argument started from the poor record for successful constitutional referendums in Australia – 37 have failed and eight have passed – and ended with a claim that we need to change the system.
