On Friday last week there was, as there is each year, a solemn ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to mark the anniversary of the Sandakan death marches.

The forced marches in Borneo towards the end of World War II constituted the greatest Japanese atrocity against Australian prisoners of war. Just six survived, while 1787 died.
