Arts funding must recognise culture as a necessity, not a luxury

Governments need to commit to adequate funding, now and in the future, while institutions need to be realistic in their ambitions.

Coming to power after the Morrison government is rather like inheriting a fabulous mansion and finding that the roof, the floor, the plumbing and the wiring all need a makeover.

In Canberra, where our most prestigious national institutions are concentrated, only the Australian War Memorial has been adequately funded over the past decade. Everything else has been allowed to slowly decay.
