Not since Robert Menzies failed to ban the Communist Party, or Billy Hughes tried to introduce conscription, has a prime minister been so heavily invested in a referendum proposal.

Menzies survived his defeat, as did Hughes, but only after ratting on Labor and forming a new government. Anthony Albanese will survive, but he has suffered the greatest blow to his prime ministership and his authority thus far.
