NSW bureaucrats claimed John Barilaro’s background as a business owner in regional NSW meant he could talk authoritatively about the “challenges of ‘going global’” as they sought to justify his appointment to a lucrative overseas trade post.

A trove of documents released under privilege has shed more light on a controversial decision to appoint former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro as the senior trade and investment commissioner to the Americas, before he withdrew from the role amid serious pressure last week.
