Using super to fund affordable housing ‘won’t solve crisis’

Experts have warned that pushing superannuation funds to invest in affordable housing will not solve the housing crisis even if it is technically allowed under Labor’s proposed definition for the purpose of the super sector, calling for reforms to planning laws instead.

The government’s bid to define the sector’s purpose has also risked reigniting a war with the opposition over first home buyer schemes, with the Coalition accusing Labor of unfairly quarantining people from their own savings.
