NSW’s opt-in stamp duty plan is a winning ticket

The critics of Dominic Perrottet’s blueprint have failed to grasp why a voluntary shift to land tax is palatable for voters.

Stamp duty is the most wretched of all taxes. Everyone knows this, including Dominic Perrottet who as NSW Treasurer introduced a viable plan to finally abolish it. As Premier, he continues to throw support behind his blueprint. It’s high time the rest of us put our collective shoulder to the wheel and help the NSW government push this reform across the line.

Help does seem to be needed. The reform is unconventional in its design, and complicated. Taxpayers are yet to be convinced. It is up to the rest of us – tax professionals, accountants, economists and the financial community – to get across the detail and explain to the community why and how this change will benefit them.
