Higher-income households win from tax offset

Higher-income households are receiving more of the low and middle income tax offset (LMITO), according to new Australian National University analysis that exposes a “myth” about the tax refund.

Extending the “temporary” $8 billion annual tax offset for a fifth year would also add to budget and inflationary pressures and clash with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s interest rate rises expected to occur later this year, ANU economist Ben Phillips said.
