The NSW government is adamant Sydney can safely host Thursday's cricket Test despite revelations a coronavirus-infected man attended Melbourne's Boxing Day Test, prompting a scramble by Victorian authorities to find thousands of potential close contacts amid fears of a new virus cluster.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground was named as a potential COVID-19 acquisition site on Wednesday after authorities failed to trace the infection of the man, in his 30s, back to a known transmission source.
