We have to be hard-nosed about soft power in Asia

The winding down of aid to south-east Asia in the face of a rising China has cost us influence in a geopolitical cross-roads of our time.

The substantial cuts to Australian aid to south-east Asia and the call by US Ambassador Arthur Culvahouse at The Australian Financial Review Business Summit dinner this week for Australia to "step-up" in south-east Asia should alarm all those who care about our nation’s future.

It's unthinkable that in an era defined by the rise of China and Washington’s increasing reluctance to play global policeman that Australia is not using every tool in the box to build a more peaceful, prosperous and cooperative region.
