Trump’s tariff war risks losing South-East Asia to Beijing

The South-East Asian nations are likely to suffer both directly from Trump’s tariffs and their impact on China. This will affect their regional and world views.

As Australia votes, it behoves us and the government we elect to think about US President Donald Trump’s new world order. We must venture beyond our tariff concerns and AUKUS. Our focus must be on the region and, within it, South-East Asia.

We now understand that the United States is not the same comforting behemoth it may once have seemed. Some aspects of Trumpism will pass. America may again see better angels. But they will not be the same angels. It will be a different country.
