The traditional ceremonies of US democracy amid the transfer of presidential power played out according to convention.

A formal inauguration speech in the presence of a predecessor who then helicopters away from the White House – politely waved goodbye by the victor. A colourful parade, albeit one held indoors because of the weather, complete with military bands, honour guards and cheerleaders.
