Once more to the brink in the Middle East

As the tinder in the Middle East smoulders once more, much will depend on whether Netanyahu lights another match or follows Washington’s calls for restraint.

Once more the world holds its breath on the Middle East. Washington has again urged restraint on Israel following Iran’s drone and missile attacks.

The question now is whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu follows the impulse of Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, who wants a “berserk” response, or war cabinet member Benny Gantz, who talks of a more sober approach to be taken at a time of Israel’s choosing.
