On Ukraine’s streets, a new mood emerges

Grief is everywhere, but so too determination. Our special correspondent shares insights from his time in Ukraine in a final dispatch.

Kyiv | After 500 days of Russia’s brutal invasion, the scars inside Ukraine are everywhere, but so too is stoicism.

On any street corner, soldiers with prosthetic limbs can be seen limping on crutches or being pushed in wheelchairs by loved ones. Daily funeral processions, nightly drone attacks and destroyed city buildings are constant reminders that other Ukrainians have not been so lucky.
