Manus Island to shut after six difficult years
Australia's refugee processing centres on Manus Island will close in late November with the remaining 120 men transferred to Port Moresby, ending a controversial six- year period when the federal government was often criticised for its treatment of those seeking asylum and the cost to taxpayers.
Two sources have told The Australian Financial Review that service providers were informed at a meeting in Brisbane last Tuesday that their contracts with the Home Affairs Department would end on November 31.
